While fans weren’t completely surprised to see Laurel Lance’s (Katie Cassidy) return in the winter finale of Arrow, the CW did rob themselves and fans of a “big reveal moment” by hastily revealing in a mid-season premiere promo, that this was in fact, not the original Laurel Lance who died last season. In all likelihood, based on the characters actions in the promo, we will actually be seeing the return of the sinister Black Siren from Earth 2, who originally appeared in season 2 of The Flash.
Cassidy had stated months ago through social media that she was looking forward to her return to the Arrow set and her coworkers. It was assumed by most, including myself, that Laurel Lance/Black Canary would be returning as a result of the Flashpoint universe that Barry Allen had created on The Flash and whose repercussions affects both shows. However, it appears that producers have thrown us a curve ball in re-introducing Black Siren instead. Now, Arrow producer Greg Berlanti goes on record and confirms the character’s involvement in not only Arrow’s fifth season, but other shows in CW/DC universe as well. “We made a deal at the end of [season 4] to bring her back for a bunch of episodes. Katie is a part of the fabric of the show. Because the show, like a comic book, can move in different ways, and characters go and come, everybody that’s ever been a part of the key and core ensemble has always had a place at the table for our show. There’s the capacity for her to be [in all four shows]. At this moment, she’s in three of them.”
Seeing how the characters of Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash (Matt Letscher), both originally from Arrow and The Flash, are currently on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, we can safely surmise that these are the three shows that Berlanti is referring to. Laurel’s appearance on Supergirl is possible, however, unlikely. In the end, that would just be too much of a stretch for the character. But, when it comes to The CW and crossovers, you just never know for sure.
