Producers of the much anticipated Assassin’s Creed film, have done their homework, or at least their gamer playing, and have tapped into the most exciting and recognizable parts of the game that the fan’s as well as new audiences will most assuredly look for in the finished film. And that will include, of course, the leap of faith that has appeared in every incarnation of the game’s franchise.
“In the movie, Micahel Fassbender’s character is trapped and he has to jump a leap of faith, jumping 125 feet.” Producer Patrick Crawley explained. “Normally it would be a digital character that would jump off, but Damien’s the best so we’re going to do it for real.” I’m peeing in my pants just thinking about it!
Producer Frank Marshall commented “Justin wants it to be as real as possible. We are going to the real world. We’re not relying on visual effects.” That meant asking Damien Walters, Micahel Fassbender’s stunt double, to perform the jump himself, which wasn’t exactly an easy undertaking.
The first jump, that’s right I said first jump, will be at 70 feet in the air. This done so Damien can get down the timing and any other logistics involved in a jump as high as he’ll be attempting. It is explained that the “footprint of the bag” that will be breaking his fall, is only 10 meters by 10 meters, so at a height of 70 feet, the bag will look “about the size of a full-on piece of paper.” He’ll be falling at 9.8 meters per second, and will hit the bag at approximately 45.7 MPH.
The second jump he’ll be taking at 90 feet high for the same logistical reasons. This time though, at this height, the bag will appear to be the size of a Post-It Note, which he’ll hit it at approximately 51.8 MPH. After this second jump though, Damien experiences some whiplash in his landing. Who’s surprised? But what’s that you say, he hasn’t taken his final jump yet?
The third and final jump takes him to his intended height of 125 feet, where he will be hitting the bag at approximately 61.1 MPH and the bag itself will appear as large as a postage stamp. Only a skilled, professional stuntman with large brass cojones can successfully make a jump like this, which by the way, is one of the highest free falls performed by a stuntman in the last 35 years.
It truly is an impressive feat to watch and as we’ve seen in the trailer, looks great on film.
Assassin’s Creed stalks into theaters on December 21st.
