Is he or isn’t he? He was, then he wasn’t. This is giving me a headache! We had reported that in a recent interview with The Guardian, Ben Affleck had shed some negative light on the current prospects of him writing, directing and starring in a new solo Batman movie. Affleck stated that, “It’s not a set thing and there’s no script,” which in itself caused fanboys and girls everywhere to lose their minds. Further reports that filming would be pushed back from a spring to an unspecified summer release would have Bat-fans absolutely Bat-shit crazy that the project would never see the light of day. But we’re to tell you to you that, yes Virginia, there will be a solo Batman movie with Ben Affleck at the helm.
In a TV interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Affleck put all of it to rest when asked by Kimmel if the project was moving ahead with him in it, “I’m gonna direct the next Batman, we’re working on it,” Affleck flat out confirmed. “It’s one of those things that’s really frustrating because with ‘Live By Night’ it took me a year-and-a-half to write it and get it ready and I worked really hard. It’s just no one gave a s**t. No one was like, ‘WHERE’S ‘LIVE BY NIGHT?’ But with Batman I keep getting the, “WHERE’S THE F**KING BATMAN?” I’m like, “Whoa, I’m working! Give me a second!”
BOOM! And so, there you have it. Better Affleck and script co-writer, DC Entertainment President and CCO Geoff Johns, take their time and perfect the script rather than rush it just to get the project into production, something that happens too often, unfortunately, in DC films. There’s a lot riding on this film for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. It NEEDS to be uber-successful for the sake of future DC hero projects. And for monetary reasons for the studios as well, but that’s not important right now. Chances are that the project will retain it’s 2019 release date. The month of release has yet to be announced.
Catch the interview for yourself in the viewer below. I love Affleck’s enthusiasm in it when he talks about the studio busting his stones about The Batman. Priceless.
Ben Affleck will next be seen as Batman in Justice League, opening in theaters on November 17.
