This truly sad news and quite a let down. The eighth and final season of Arrow, has taken a major hit with the recent announcement dropped online by Emily Bett Rickards, who has played Felicity Smoak since the third episode of Season 1, that she will be departing her role and the series at the end of Season 7.
Rickards’ poetic announcement came from herself yesterday via Instagram, writing, “Felicity and I are a very tight two. But after one through seven, we will be saying goodbye to you.” With the show’s true direction still a mystery, the loss of this character, and she’s not just any character- she just happens to be Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) wife, mother of his unborn child, and the brains behind Team Arrow, creates a major hole in the existing team and the upcoming season as well.
This season, by way of the flash-forward storyline, we have already seen Felicity fleeing a public life to protect her children, operating under the new guise of the Calculator and managing to keep herself alive in the years to come. What we don’t know is the how or the why Felicity flees Oliver’s side not to mention her team/family as a whole.
Clearly this is not news to the studio or the series’ showrunners, and, if you take into account what we’ve seen in both the flash-forward footage and Oliver’s secretive conversation with The Monitor that took place during the Elseworlds crossover event, they’ve set things up perfectly for both Emily’s departure and possibly the end of the series as well.
Hopefully, the final 10 episodes of the series will spend a little time dealing with the various characters coping with losing Felicity, regardless of the cause. Given her importance to Team Arrow and the series, the final 10 episodes of the upcoming season 8 will no doubt see other characters not only stepping in to take up the slack that the loss of this character creates on the team, but also coping with the loss of their friend and family member.
