It has been announced that Universal Pictures is partnering with Amasia Entertainment and has optioned the rights to The Green Hornet for the reboot to the film franchise that was announced back in January. Michael Helfant, the former president of Marvel Studios, and Bradley Gallo will produce the film for Amasia.
The official title to the film will be The Green Hornet and Kato, and this will be the first time in the characters’ screen history that Kato will receive equal billing. The character was first introduced through pulp magazines and radio shows in the 1930’s, but really caught traction with fans via the 1960’s television series that starred Van Williams in the title role and Gung Fu Master Bruce Lee as his trusty accomplice. The Green Hornet series focuses on newspaper owner/publisher Britt Reid, who dons a mask and takes on the persona of the Hornet to fight crime and protect his city, along with his Asian valet and martial arts master Kato.
“Our goal is to make a film that existing fans will love, and new fans will love to discover,” Helfant commented in a statement while point out that it was Universal that brought the character to the big screen in the 1940’s serials as well. “With Universal, it feels like we are merging the past and the future, creating a contemporary version of the franchise that is fresh and exciting while respecting its long legacy and history.”
“The confluence of America and Asia is so important,” Gallo added. “Who better to partner with than a company that has such a major presence on both continents? We also know that Universal will align with our ‘film geek’ sensibilities and offer up a vision which respects the iconic world of The Green Hornet.”
We think it’s pretty cool that the character is back at Universal as well. It’s where the character’s screen history started and, hopefully, it’ll finally get the respect that it so well deserves this time around. Just sayin’.
Writers and a director for the film have not yet been selected.
Let’s Roll, Kato!
